‘Insider’ Information From Google’s Go Monetization Event in Singapore

Just yesterday, I attended Google’s Go Monetization event in Singapore. This is the first time that Google has organized such an event in Singapore and the main reason could be that Singapore’s internet marketers are starting to grow bigger. Besides visiting Google, I spent some time talking with the staff and trying to dig out some ‘insider’ information regarding Adwords, Adsense, and SEO!

My guess is that if a webmaster has a website that has a lot of traffic, Google will invite them to the event and educate them on how to increase their Adsense revenues or start making money from Adsense.

I went in a little late after getting my banana smoothie and networking with other webmasters, so I’m sitting all the way at the back. It’s free banana smoothie sponsored by Google by the way. =p

It was quite a good networking event as I met up a few familiar Singaporean internet marketers like Dylan Loh (clickbank gamers) and also Martin Lee (lioninvestor.com). There are also many people who just put up great content on their website without knowing how to monetize them (pretty impressive that if you just put in the hard work, you will definitely make money online).

And we were given some materials (information from Google like Double Click, Adsense Optimization, AdMob), a pen, and that’s my banana smoothie.

During the breaks, we also can consult the Google team and get them to help us to optimize our website for increase earnings. But the question is how skilled the Google Adsense team is? After all, they are not able to make anything more than $30 from Google Adsense even with their websites.

But I’ve managed to talk to some of the staffs regarding their operations in Singapore. Here are some of the questions I’ve asked.

George: Are you guys the local Google team? So how big is the team?

Google’s Adsense Team: Yes, we are. Our office is at Temasek Boulevard. But yea, our team isn’t very big. Most of the Google’s core is based in the US.

George: This seems to be the first time that Google is conducting such an event in Singapore. Would Google be conducting more of such events?

Google’s Adsense Team: This is our first time holding such an event here over at Singapore.

George: So are you guys able to make money from Google Adsense as well?

Google’s Adsense Team: No, our earnings are capped at $30 because of Adsense policies. Even if we make a lot of money, we can only get $30 out of it because Google feels that we know the system too well and may exploit it.

George: But can you guys get someone else to open an account?

Google’s Adsense Team: Yes we can and some of our staffs are secretly doing so. But we don’t encourage that.

George: Google is so bad towards their staff! By the way, are you guys know anything about the Adwords team?

Google’s Adsense Team: Yes, Adwords team is just right beside us. We worked closely with the Adwords team to understand their sales and questions.

George: One of my Adwords account actually gets slapped by Google, do you know is there any way we can get it reinstate?

Google’s Adsense Team: Why does your account ban? Do you know the reason?

George: I think it’s because of violating some Adwords policies, like promoting affiliate products. I’m not a big time user of Adwords but just testing some of the keywords out as market research. Is it possible to reinstate the account?

Google’s Adsense Team: You probably got to ask the Adwords team about that. They are pretty strict regarding the policies but there are some accounts get reinstated case by case basis.

George: With Adwords slap and recent Google farmer slap, Google is getting frightening. Do you guys know how the Google farmer slap works?

Google’s Adsense Team: Basically it’s about unique and original content, as long as your website is visitor’s orientated, you should be quite safe from the slap.

George: I have a website with both articles that are used in article directories and also in the website, I find that it drops in rankings, is it because of the original content?

Google’s Adsense Team: Yes, it is probably because of that because Google values unique content. However, the main team for SEO is over at US rather than Singapore.

That’s basically the main gist of the questions I’ve asked. These questions and answers are just from the back of my memory so it has been edited and rephrase by me.

Before I end this post, here’s the last item I’ve won! – Golf balls with Google’s logo on it!

I tried googled for Google golf balls and it seems that this is the first time they made as a corporate gifts in the world. Anyway, it’s quite a great even there, the only pity thing about Singaporeans internet marketers is that so many of them are so unfriendly!

It seems that they are afraid that someone else would go and steal their niches. I mean they could just say that they are in for example ‘fitness’ market rather than ‘strength training’ niche.

That’s one of the things I learnt over the years when come to networking – If we network more, and share more, we could have grown further together as a team. That goes for online too. But the key to successful networking is to help one anther out without agenda.

What would you like to ask Google if you get a chance to meet up with them? If you like this article, click on the share button or like button and share it with your friends!

  4. this was one of the most interesting posts I have read! It was so fascinating to read your experience at the event. It’s funny how they can not make anything more than $30 but it makes sense – just like how if a company runs a competition then their employees and their family cannot enter it. Makes sense.

Google golf balls? How cool! :)

    George Tee Reply:

@Gabriella – The Stepford Wife: Thanks Gabi! and they do have a loophole regarding the $30. They can simply use another person’s name and make an arrangement to make money from Google Adsense.
