Market Landscape

Understanding your market landscape is one of the important process before you enter the market.

In the old days, when there are wars, generals who understand the terrain, the landscape, would have a significant advantage of the battle. For instance, they need to understand the weather, the land, the sea, the morale of their armies, the morale of the opponent’s army. And it’s only they understand how to play with these advantage, then they are able to control the situation of the battle effectively.

The same goes to your online business too. Only when you understand your market landscape, then you are able to master your business well and have a significant advantage over your competitors.

In your market landscape, there are 5 market forces that you need to do your research before you enter your market.

I’ll assume that you have done your homework on researching on the size of the markets that you are interested in. and I’ll assume that your market is a big one.

First of all, after you have your market chosen, you need to identify the niches in your market. A niche is defined as a specialty in the market.

For example, in the dog market, there are several niches like dog training, dog foods, dog accesories etc.

If we just zoom down into dog training market, there are several kind of training niches like dog obedience, dog behavior, dog aggression, dog agility.

For a start, you can target the dog training market, but probably zoom down into specific areas like dog obedience, dog behavior rather than the whole market.

The way I would do is to start with a niche in the market that I can enter in, then once i established myself in the niche, i would expand into other niches in the same market. For example, i would start with dog obedience, then go on to dog behavior, dog agility.

In the end, my goal is to dominate the dog training market. But when I first start, I do it step by step.

As I’m identifying the niches, I would do some keyword research. These would tell me whether there are people searching for the keyword and whether I can do SEO in the future.

I would search for all the keywords in the different niches to understand the true demand of doing SEO. Doing keyword research as well as looking out who is dominating the keywords.

Next, I look at the different websites in the top of the search engine. These websites can be classified into
- Company websites
- Bloggers
- Content Web 2.0 sites.

With the keywords research, you can identify the players in your market. who are the authority in the market, who are the partners in the market.

You can roughly tell whether they are a potential partner or a competitor.

But you want to understand how their position is
- are they writing as an expert?
- are they writing as a third person
- are they writing as someone who has overcome the problem?

Finding these information can provide you with additional advantage -
1) If most of them are experts, then you come in as a neutral person who aims to get interviews from all of them – borrowed expert
2) If most of them are just some newbies or lousy blogger – then you come in as an expert to show who is authority
3) If most of them are just company website with stagnant and boring content, then you can come in as a blogger who has personal touch
4) If most of them are just blogger with personal touch, then you come in as a blogger who do research on journals and papers.

Whatever the market terrain is, there are ways that you can break into the market no matter how tough, how competitive the market is.

This is what I called the Internet Marketing Art of War. And what I’ve shared with you are the basic of the Art of War.

Next, you also want to look into the social media like facebook and see who is in the market applying facebook marketing.

This allow you to have an indepth idea of how you can tap into facebook to drive potential prospects to your website.

Search for identical fanpage around your niche that revolve around your keywords. Look at their promotional strategy, look at their walls, and also look at the way they communicate with their readers.

Look out for the one with a lot of communication.

Facebook would serve as a good platform for you to tap into new visitors. If you are first building your website/blog, it is advisable to just have a fb fanpage for you to build better relationship with your readers. You simply only want to have a fanpage box in your website to allow your readers to know about your fanpage. If you are just starting out, you definitely don’t want to spend any ads on fb because you don’t know how to convert them into sales.

But a fanpage definitely can come you to build a better relationship with your readers.

But you want to explore how the other partners or competitors are using their fanpage. they can be a good source of potential fans.

If you build a good relationship with your competitors, sometimes you can leverage onto their fans to build your group of fans.

Lastly, you want to identify the products and services available in the market. If there are a wide range of products and services out there in the market, there will probably be more things to talk about or recommend in the future. That also means the market has enough depth for you to go into.

Once you have analyze all these forces, you can then find out exactly how you can tap upon or strategize your way into the market.
